From there, the handwritten exercises were then written entirely out on a music program which made the book more presentable and legible to his students. After two years of teaching from his own material, one of his students offered to design the book; hence, what it is today. Adam explains, “Over the years of hearing drum beats in different kinds music and what similarities occur in drum grooves of different popular styles of music, I wanted to create a book that would give a good foundation in these styles as well as helping them (the students) achieve greater creative capacities on how they could play these grooves.” The “Ghetto Drum Book 101” is a book geared towards beginning and/or intermediate students who wish to learn how to play the drum kit. The book is broken down into three sections, along with a solo based on each individual section.
Sections 1 and 2 display five different ways to play the same groove or drum beat. The five different ways are 8th notes, quarter notes, “offbeat” 8th notes, 16th notes on one hand, 16th notes with alternating hands. The bass and snare drum remain the same while the cymbal pattern changes. After completing both sections, then you should go to Section 3 to learn how to apply the “open hat” technique to grooves that are based on the same types of drum beats in the first two sections. I don’t have a solo written for Section 3 simply for the reason of which I would hope by then you can improvise enough to put your own open hats whenever and wherever you want.
